The ground-breaking research will question gender diversity across horseracing in Great Britain. The study will start to align horseracing with other sports, particularly those funded via Sport England and in the corporate world where similar research has previously and successfully been executed.
Previous research in other sectors has demonstrated the benefits generated by diversity in groups versus homogeneity in groups.
The research will be undertaken in partnership with Women in Racing (WiR) by a team from the Centre for Diversity Policy Research and Practice at Oxford Brookes University. They will be led by the Director of the Centre, Professor Simonetta Manfredi, co-author of the award winning book on Managing Equality and Diversity published by Oxford University Press (2013).
Additionally, a small team from WiR will work closely with Oxford Brookes. The project will include both interviews and surveys with the aim to reach as many people as possible involved in British horseracing. This will be conducted through various groups and stakeholders of the sport. However, WiR also welcomes hearing directly from any individuals.
The organisation successfully applied for a grant from The Racing Foundation, which has enabled the research.
Sally Rowley-Williams, Chair of WiR said: "I am thrilled that, with the assistance of the Racing Foundation, that Women in Racing is able to conduct this important research with Oxford Brookes University. I have been familiar with the research covering the benefits of diversity for at least 10 years and so it is so fulfilling that we can examine the state of horseracing today and see where we excel and where we have more work to do.
"I also believe strongly that it is the right thing to do in terms of corporate governance for horseracing and can provide a framework for the future development of the pipelines of talent, from the stable yards right through to the boardrooms that regulate and monitor British Horseracing."
