Women in Racing calls for progress on gender diversity in British Racing

Today, at its 7th AGM Women in Racing calls for progress on gender diversity in British Racing.

The AGM took place at Oaksey House, Lambourn and saw Chair, Julie Deadman, and the committee provide an update to members and guests on the work of Women in Racing over the past year.

In line with the recommendations of the research carried out by the Centre for Diversity Policy Research at Oxford Brookes University, published at the 2017 AGM at York Racecourse, Women in Racing reiterates its call for more women to be appointed and elected to positions of influence across the sport.

In particular, Women in Racing would like to see all organisations in British racing have boards with a minimum 70/30 gender split, in line with the requirements of UK Sport’s A Code for Sports Governance.

For its part Women in Racing reiterated the work it does to supports its members and push for change. These were summarised by Tallulah Lewis, who the committee appointed as Deputy Chair to support Julie Deadman as Chair.  Over the next year Women in Racing will focus its energies on the following strands of work:

Research: Coordinating and supporting the publication of the diversity research with Centre for Diversity Policy Research at Oxford Brookes University;

As well as a new Deputy Chair, Women in Racing is delighted to have a new member of the committee. Jane Jackson, Head of Sponsorship at Ascot Racecourse, will join the committee for a term of three years after standing for election and being voted in my Women in Racing’s members. In turn, Fiona Hinds steps down from the committee after two years and the committee would like to thank her for all she has contributed during that time.

Aside from matters relating to the AGM, guests enjoyed an inspiring talk from Kiko Matthews, who, despite neurosurgery in 2017, recently set a new world record for the fastest solo female transatlantic row, and is only the 6th woman ever to complete this challenge.

Guests then enjoyed prosecco, canapes and networking, along with a tour of the state-of-the-art facilities at the recently refurbished Oaksey House, which provides specialist rehabilitation for physical and neurological injuries. 

Julie Deadman, Chair of Women in Racing, said: “2017 was a milestone year for Women in Racing with the publication of the Oxford Brookes diversity research which clearly called for greater gender diversity in British Racing. With increased progress being seen in the jockey ranks Women in Racing wants to ensure equal recognition of women’s talents in the board room and on executive teams.”

“The establishment of the Diversity in Racing Steering Group is a positive step, but progress must be maintained, and we look forward to analysing the Action Plan the group is publishing later this month.

“We are delighted to welcome Jane Jackson as a new member to the committee and look forward to an exciting 2018/19 which will once again include a line-up of unique events, as well as continuing our pioneering bursary and mentoring programmes.
